Womenfolk of Falkirk
Womenfolk of Falkirk is a colourful folk-style map celebrating the women who have helped shape Falkirk — past, present and those who have come from elsewhere and made the town their home.
As a Falkirk artist, this has been such a special project for me. I loved looking into the stories of local women from different periods in the town’s history, from well-known figures to the everyday women whose work, creativity, care and determination have all played a part in making Falkirk what it is today.
The artwork brings together Falkirk’s streets, buildings and landmarks with references to women’s roles through the years — the mothers, teachers, nurses, makers, artists, shopkeepers, workers, carers, campaigners, business owners, storytellers and many more.
I found the research incredibly interesting and inspiring. It really made me think about how much of a town’s story is built not only by the people whose names appear in history books, but by the thousands of women who have quietly contributed to their families, workplaces and communities.
I am immensely proud to have this piece of public art displayed in my own town. You can find Womenfolk of Falkirk on Falkirk High Street, just outside the Bank of Scotland.
The project was created as part of Falkirk: From Place to Creative Space, led by Artlink Central in partnership with Falkirk Delivers, with funding from Creative Scotland.
